Seminar on Towards a Resilient Bangladesh : Understanding Seismic Risks, Designing Safety and Managing Emergencies

On 7th December,2025, the Department of Civil Engineering at MIST, unfolded as a powerful and insightful seminar focused on Bangladesh’s path to earthquake resilience. Titled “Towards a Resilient Bangladesh: Understanding Seismic Risks, Designing Safety and Managing Emergencies,” the session brought together students, faculty, and professionals for an engaging exchange on safety, engineering responsibility, and national preparedness.

The seminar was honored by the presence of Maj Gen Md Hasan Uz Zaman, ndu, afwc, psc, MPhil, Engineer in Chief, Bangladesh Army, who attended as the Chief Guest. In his speech, he emphasized the urgency of building a disaster-conscious nation and reminded young engineers of their critical duty to protect lives through informed design and responsible decision-making.

Moderated by Prof. Md Zoynul Abedin, the seminar began by highlighting the humanitarian core of engineering-every decision made by an engineer ultimately affects human lives.

Prof. Mehedi Ahmed Ansary, the first keynote speaker, discussed Bangladesh’s seismic zones, historical earthquakes, and the risks amplified by rapid urbanization.

Prof. Raquib Ahsan followed with insights on how technical readiness strengthens national resilience, stressing that resilience extends beyond engineering to include communities, policymakers, and institutions.

The final keynote, Prof. Md Tauhid Ur Rahman, reflected on the 5.7-magnitude earthquake of November 21, 2025, addressing gaps in evacuation, communication, and urban preparedness. He shared the human experiences behind the disaster and lessons from global response models such as Japan and China.

The seminar concluded with a prize-giving ceremony honoring the winners of the previous day’s competitions.

Overall, the second day of CEnertia25 stood out as an inspiring milestone-encouraging all attendees to contribute to a safer, stronger, and more resilient Bangladesh.
